Interwoven workflow

Zed · Nathan Sobo

The middle path. Position agentic engineering between two failure modes: utopianism ("all code will be AI-generated") and dismissive skepticism ("it's all hype"). The work is integration, not replacement — most engineering orgs already live in the interwoven state; they just haven't named it.

PHASE 1 · TRADITIONAL deterministic fast · reliable PHASE 2 · EMERGING stochastic fluid · exploratory PHASE 3 · INTERWOVEN interwoven predictable + unpredictable Most engineering orgs are already in Phase 3 — they haven't named it yet
The three-phase model. A diagnostic frame for assessments.

Four principles

  1. Quality is our responsibility — ↔ Evals (Husain).
  2. Craftsmanship is critical — ↔ Litt's surgeon model.
  3. Skills improve outcomes — ↔ Context engineering + plan mode + the viral CLAUDE.md.
  4. A new way to collaborate — ↔ Hashimoto + Skills/Hooks/Subagents.

"Stochastic tool mastery" — Zed's most distinctive coinage. Working with non-deterministic systems is itself an engineering skill.

Three uses. (1) Executive narrative. Middle-path framing is the best pitch we have. (2) Diagnostic. Use the three-phase model in assessments. (3) Curriculum. "Stochastic tool mastery" is sellable as a training program.
